Bangkok is considered a city where the familiar and exotic collide. It is the cultural, economic and political capital of Thailand. The city offers visitors the full-on food experience, fun folks, and urban exploration. The city features both old-world charm and modern convenience. The streets of Bangkok buzz with so much life while visitors are offered many sightseeing opportunities from extended boat trips to a hidden market to a stroll along Chinatown, to the local nightlife scene. The city’s multifaceted personality emerges from the visible contrasts between shared spaces of people, structures, and natural surroundings. Within a day a sophisticated and dynamic city is revealed. Since its founding in 1782, Bangkok is now considered a transport hub and a popular travel destination in Asia.


Located near the equator, Bangkok has a tropical climate. The temperatures typically range from 19 to 38C (66-100 F). Monsoon rains fall predominately from May to July, and cooler weather occurs around November and December.


Approximately 7 million of the country’s total population lives in Bangkok.The population of Thailand is roughly 65 million.


Thai is the official language of Thailand. English is spoken and understood by some locals, particularly in key cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.


The standard time in Bangkok is GMT +7.


Banks are normally open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 15.30 pm. Meanwhile, branches and currency exchange counters located inside shopping malls are open during weekend, and they operate longer hours.

All major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants. The most widely accepted credit cards are Visa and Master Card. Restaurants and shops generally display signs indicating which cards are accepted.


The country code +66 is used for calling Thailand from another country.

The phone system in the country is modern and widespread. Local SIM cards for mobile phone can be purchased at the airport, shopping malls and convenience stores. Moreover, mobile phones from overseas will work in Thailand, provided they are compatible with GSM 900 and 1800 networks. Calling friends and family while in Bangkok using your roaming number is possible; however, the charges can be quite expensive.

Meanwhile, payphones are available in most parts of Bangkok. They accept either coins or prepaid phone cards that can be purchased at convenience stores. Emergency numbers are often three or four digits, including 1555 for Tourist Police.
